Some Important Safety Considerations When Making Or Buying A Costume For Your Girl

I’ll never forget one Halloween when our daughter, who was only 9 at the time, was having such a great time going door to door with all of her friends and doing the trick-or-treat ritual. All of us parents were chatting away as we walked just a few steps behind the kids. It was really about the first time our daughter felt comfortable going around the neighborhood with just her friends.

We didn’t think much about costume safety before then, but all of a sudden our little girl was crossing the street and her costume got stuck on a parked car and pulled her down. Her head hit the curb, and she cracked her front tooth and had a horrible bloody lip.

Of course that was the end of her Halloween evening, and she cried all the way home. The next morning she looked like she went a few rounds with Mike Tyson or Ali, with a big swollen lip and black eye.

The moral of our story is that you need to remember just a few simple things about Costume Safety before your next party or Halloween, and this is true whether you are making the costumes yourself or purchasing your Halloween costume. So here are a few safety tips for good costume safety.

Tip number 1: Make sure your little girl’s costume fits well

First, our daughter suffered her fall because she had a very loose fitting costume with some hanging pieces. She was an adorable little witch, but the costume could have fit her better. So tip number 1, make sure that your costume is a good fit for your little girl.

Tip number 2: Make sure the costume is a high-visability costume

If you are going to be indoors, this may not be a big concern. However, for Halloween or other outdoor parties, especially at night, make sure that the costume is highly visible. Even if your child is going to wear a dark or even black costume, you will want to pick up some of the glow-in-the dark type products, glow sticks, glow necklace or the like. You want to make sure that everyone can see your precious little girls in their adorable costumes.

Also, kids love flashlights! There are all sorts and sizes of flashlights available, and it’s a very good idea to have a flashlight that your child can carry. I have even seen glowing candy bags for the trick-or-treaters to carry. So at least if the costume is dark, maybe your child’s candy bag can be a bright color or light up the night with some sort of electric light or glow feature.

Tip Number 3 – Make sure the costumes are flame retardant or resistant.

Face it – on Halloween, there’s going to be all sorts of pumpkins and other Halloween displays that are lit by candles or other fire devices. So if you are purchasing a costume, check the label to see if it is flame retardant or flame resistant. If you are making the costumes at home, make sure that you use a flame retardant material.

We don’t want your little girls and boys to trip and fall like what happened to our daughter. So make sure your costumes fit well, can be easily seen by others – especially drivers, and that the costumes are resistant to flame. You’ll have a great costume party or a super Halloween, and make sure you pick your little ladie something special from costumes for girls!
